25.11.14 일상 영어 표현

최근 메신저로 인도인 친구를 사귀어서 채팅 중인데 오랜만에 영어를 쓰니 정말 실력이 처참해졌다는 걸 느끼고 오답노트(?) 를 정리합니다. 코딩을 영문으로 한다고 해서 영어 실력이 느는 게 아닙니다.

아래부터는 제가 말했던 표현과 AI가 고쳐준 표현입니다.

 

나: "It has good flavor."

It tastes good. / It has good flavor(가능하지만 덜 자연스러움)

 

나: "I went company today."

I went to work today.
(I went to the company today 가능, 하지만 출근 의미엔 work)

 

나: "난 네가 그 단어를 안다는 것에 놀랐다."

I was surprised that you knew that word.

 

나: "Anyway if you can speak, then learning Hangul is easier."

Anyway, if you can speak it, learning Hangul is easier.

 

나: "What are words example you can speak?"

What words can you say?
(“say”가 자연스럽다)

 

나: "I had studied English in school for several years"

문장 자체는 맞지만 자연스럽게는 I studied English in school for several years.
(had studied는 더 과거 사건 있을 때 비교하는 용도로 사용)

-> 과거, 현재완료, 과거완료 구분하기

 

나: "Cool! what webtoons do you like?"

완전 자연스러움. (유일하게 인정받음 ;)

 

나: It was fun because I hang out with chat, not real talk. If I talk with eng, I will feel same thing.

It was fun because I was hanging out in chat, not talking in real life. If I speak in English, I think I’ll feel the same way.

 

나: My friends and I joked several times like 'University in real life never have Yoo Jeong'

My friends and I joked several times like, “Universities in real life never have someone like Yoo Jeong.”

(대학시절 실제로 했던 대화임)

나: I'm tired about being jailed in work.
답: 자연스럽게는 "I'm tired of being stuck at work."

 

나: your welcome 말고 자주쓰는 표현 있지않나

답: No problem, No worries, My pleasure

 

나: did you get to collage?

답: “collage”는 콜라주고… 사람한테 콜라주에 도착했냐고 물으면 예술혼 폭발한 줄 알겠다.

Did you arrive at school?

나: I might go to sleep later. 는 왜 may가 아니고 might임?

답: 구어체에서는 거의 always "might"를 씀. 일상 영어 회화에서는 may는 너무 격식 있고 딱딱하게 들려.

may는 사람에 따라선 뭔가 허가(permission)처럼 들릴 수도 있음.

"I may go to sleep later."라고 하면, "선생님, 제가 나중에 잘 수도 있나요?" 같은 느낌.

나: "나는 요즘 책을 읽고있다 영어로?"

• I’ve been reading a book these days.
• 현재완료진행은 과거부터 지금까지 계속 진행하고 있다는 것을 강조할때 쓴다.

 

나: "과거완료진행이 뭐임?"

• 형식: had + been + -ing
• She had been studying for hours before the exam started.
  (시험 시작 전까지 몇 시간 동안 계속 공부하고 있었다)
• 이건 거의 “상황 설명용”이라 일상에서는 많이 안 씀.

 

나: " I haven't read fantasy ganres a lot, but I read fantasy webtoon named 'The Greatest Estate Developer' several days ago."

• I haven’t read a lot of fantasy, but I did read a fantasy webtoon called ‘The Greatest Estate Developer’ a few days ago.
• 강조하기 위해 did read를 사용함.

역대급 영지 설계사 재밌음.. 참고로 인도친구도 이미 봤다고 한다...

 

나: "Even I skipped sleeping."

• I even skipped sleep이나 I even stayed up for it
• even을 I 앞에 쓰면 I를 강조하는 것처럼 들림. (나조차도 ~)
• skip은 타동사고, skip sleep, skip breakfast 등으로 쓰인다.

I'm not the only one, I wasn't the only one, It wasn’t just me 등으로 표현해야 자연스러움.

 

나: Have you read other webtoons that belong to webtoon's universe?

Have you read other webtoons set in the same universe?

same 앞엔 거의 항상 the가 붙는다. "same"은 특정한 동일 대상을 가리키기 때문.

 

나: 제목이 뭐냐고 물을 땐 뭐라고 함?

What’s it called?

What’s the title?

Do you know the name of it?

- 소유격으로 써야 한다.
